When your client can't decide on a design concept, what do you do?
For many graphic designers and web designers, it can be challenging to get a client's buy-in if they don't have a well-defined goal or understand the strategy and tactics to support the mission. Sometimes a client needs inspiration or visual ideas to motivate them. For example, you may have a client that cannot decide on a logo design or layout for various reasons. Sometimes, weeks and months may pass without any movement and not only does this kill your timeline, but there is no value in a project that sits idle.
Here are a few recommendations for branding and website design firms to move past this road block.
1. Follow up with clients regularly to make sure they have had a chance to review the latest proof or round of edits. In your communication, establish your availability to discuss any changes or requirements by phone on specific dates. This creates a greater sense of urgency to respond to your email/phone call.
2. Ask questions to ensure that the client's goal hasn't changed. Although UI/UX designers and project managers prefer having set perimeters, we know that changes are a reality in this industry. A client may request the project to take a new direction, so it's vital to be in sync with the client's wants and needs for a true win-win result.
3. Take it a step further and present a two- or three-dimensional renderings of the logo, brand identity package, website, newsletter, or digital marketing piece. By showcasing a design as a digital mock-up, the client has a better visualization of how the creative will look in real life. Clients will appreciate the extra step you take to layout a design concept that appears real and tangible.
I can't stress enough how important step 3 is because you can boost your client's confidence in the project and help them achieve their goals while staying on target with your project timeline. In turn, you and your clients will feel happy about the progress being made. Finally, we're getting somewhere.
